There are lots of differences. One of the main ones is that you likely won’t meet the registrar conducting the ceremony until the day, A celebrant will have been working with you for several months before the ceremony, to help create your ideal day
In short, no. In order to be legally married you will need to use the services of a registrar at some point. My advice is to take care of the legalities a few days before the big day, in what is known as a simple ceremony or 2+2. Think of it as getting the paperwork done so that you're ready to have a good time.
You'll get a wedding ceremony which really reflects who you are. The standard registrar script is quite restrictive, and meeting the legal requirements doesn’t leave much room for creativity. A celebrant will create a wedding ceremony to reflect you and your personalities, and can include anything you like in terms of music, readings, spiritual elements, the sky's the limit.
A simple ceremony, with the wedding couple plus two witnesses, in a registry office will be around £55. It costs significantly more for a registrar to come out to a venue; in South Gloucestershire the 2024 charges are £736 to have a registrar visit a venue on a Friday or Saturday, and £861 on Sundays or bank holidays. In Bristol registrar fees for 2024 range from £674 to £781 at venues other than the registry office.
Absolutely! With a celebrant you’re not tied to any legal requirement for premises to be licenced. You can have the ceremony anywhere you like - at home, a favourite pub or restaurant, it's your choice. I’m a certified scuba diver, we can even do the ceremony underwater if you like!
Of course they can! Dogs can make great ring bearers.
